Mural Arts Philadelphia started in 1984 in an effort to cover up the city’s graffiti. Over the past 35 years, the program has morphed into so much more. Artists and communities work together to transform public spaces with anywhere from 50-100 art projects each year.Originally intended as a temporary display of resilience, the 6,000 square foot image of the flag has remained one of Mural Arts’ most visible and iconic works since the fall of 2001.
